Why She's Worth Watching: Dar Williams has become a major force on the New England folk scene. An idiosyncratic songwriter who writes folk songs from a unique, often insightful perspective, Williams takes pains to avoid the coy, and the quirky; her songwriting and performing style has been compared to that of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez but with a few acidic and, at times, hilarious twists.

The Milk Carton Kids, a harmonizing, minimalist, americana duo in tradition of The Avett Brothers and The Civil Wars, has been drawing praise for their compelling narrative, their seamless interplay between 1950's acoustics, well-constructed harmony lines, and their natural stage chemistry, since their formation in early 2011. Praised by NPR as "gorgeous contemporary folk," this is a group you'll want to keep an eye.
