John Hiatt and The Combo
Sunday, March 14
8:30pm
$77

Artist's Website: JohnHiatt.com
Why He's Worth Watching:
Those of us who grew up understanding there was no difference (that mattered) in the music of Elvis, Ray Charles, Slim Harpo and Johnny Cash knew immediately upon hearing John Hiatt’s first numbers 31 years ago that he was a kindred spirit. That’s not to say only the rock and roll generation can appreciate Hiatt’s cleverness, idiomatic versatility, distinctive gruff and endearing voice, or slashing guitar skills. But when everyone from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Rodney Crowell and Willie Nelson to Buddy Guy, Flaco Jimenez and Ry Cooder have covered his tunes, it’s quite clear that those who appreciate great songwriting and savor a keen wit, narrative flair and refusal to pen a sloppy or sappy line, eagerly embrace John Hiatt’s tunes. John Hiatt and The Combo Players include Doug Lancio on Guitar; Kenneth Blevins on Drums and Patrick O’hearn on Bass
For Fans Of: Dave Alvin, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, James McMurtry

Formed in October 1969, Wishbone Ash was gigging by 1970. The band garnered notice in the early days for a unique blend of blues, jazz and English folk. Throughout the years, many notable musicians have contributed their talents to the band, including Asia’s John Wetton, Trevor Bolder from Uriah Heep and Laurie Wisefield, who would later play guitar for Joe Cocker and Tina Turner.

Jack Ingram
Thursday, March 25
8pm
$20

Artist's Website: Jack's MySpace
Why He's Worth Watching: When Jack Ingram won the 2008 Academy of Country Music award for “Best New Male Vocalist,” thousands of people in the audience had to be smiling to themselves about that whole "new" thing. They knew the 30-something, steel-eyed veteran accepting that trophy on that stage in Vegas had been rocking roadhouses, theaters and stadiums relentlessly since 1997, that he'd been celebrated by critics and fans of hard-core country music for more than a decade, and that as a Texas-born songwriter and performer, he'd been on the short list of next generation artists who could fill the boots of Lone Star legends like Willie and Waylon and the boys.
For Fans Of: Gary Allan, Tim McGraw, Sammy Kershaw

$29.50

On Turn Me Loose, Ledisi, who is up for a few Grammys again this year, kicks up the groove and unleashes more of the funk-soul dynamo she becomes onstage. Echoes of vintage Chaka and Aretha are heard throughout, but Ledisi is clearly on her way to becoming a soul legend herself. --Rashod Ollison

Their brassy-reedy-rich grooves, their tight-and-right turns, their bleeding ballads and orchestral funk are monuments to the enduring stature of soul.
For Fans Of: James Brown, Bloodstone, Average White Band

Bob Schneider
Monday, March 29

Alice Smith
Wednesday, March 31
8pm
$22.50

Artist's Website: alicesmith.com
Song Samples: Dream, Woodstock
Why You Should Attend: Smith is the most promising female singer-songwriter to go her own enrapturing way in a very long time. Her voice, with its four-octave range, is luscious and powerful and nuanced and finely sensitive to rhythm. Yet it never makes a cult of its own abilities; for all its fantastic manners, Smith's voice gets on down the road. Sometimes she sings with a booming intensity, yet Smith never loses the unlearnable balance and poise that separates good singers from great ones.
For Fans Of: Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend

Why He's Worth Watching: Inspired by blues legends like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Patton and Big Joe Turner, Duke's guitar work has seamlessly spanned the worlds of jazz, blues, and swing since he founded the renowned big band, Roomful of Blues, in 1967. Since 1980, Duke has recorded over a dozen acclaimed solo albums and toured the world both with his own band and also as Jimmie Vaughan's replacement in The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Called "one of the great players" by the legendary B.B. King, Duke's upbeat live performance, accented by a swinging horn section, is a tasteful display of a wide variety of blues styles.
